Understanding Photobiomodulation (PBM)
The following is a summary of (1) how light works to stimulate biological changes, (2) how that light is best delivered and (3) how a full body Photobiomodulation – LED Light Therapy Bed works to help people feel, think, look and perform better.

The Core Benefits of PBM
3 Key Mechanisms of Light Supplementation
Light triggers 3 key actions in the cells. These actions include (1) increasing cellular energy, (2) increasing circulation and (3) detoxification of waste and free radicals.
A full body photobiomodulation system initiates these 3 key actions throughout the entire body, creating a systemic effect that cascades down into the tissues organs and systems. As the cells get healthy, so does the entire body.
Below and to follow in sections of Understanding PBM, our mission is to create a base understanding of how full body photobiomodulation helps people Feel, Think, Look and Perform Better TM.
Cellular Energy
Inside of the cells are tiny organelles called Mitochondria. Mitochondria are the powerhouses of the cell providing the fuel that cells use to function.
Mitochondria convert photons, or the energy of light into ATP, the energy of the body.
ATP is a high energy and relatively unstable molecule with 3 phosphate ions. When one of the phosphate ions break off, energy is released into the cells and ATP converts to ADP. Like a light bulb needs electricity, our cells require ATP.
Inside of the Mitochondria is what may be compared to an assembly line with 5 production stations called the respiratory chain. The Photobiomodulation (PBM) photon is absorbed by receptors in the cells (Cytochrome C Oxidase) which begins to push that photon through the conversion process that ultimately converts light energy into ATP.
Ultimately, photobiomodulation (PBM) increases cellular energy by restoring mitochondrial function and improving ATP production. This feeds the cells with more usable energy.
Please see Mitochondria, Aging and Photobiomodulation (PBM) to understand how Photobiomodulation (PBM) can slow, halt or reverse mitochondrial dysfunction, a core factor in aging. If Photobiomodulation (PBM) can restore mitochondrial dysfunction, then it could theoretically slow, halt or reverse the aging process.
LED Light therapy detoxifies cells of waste and free radicals. Free radical damage is a driver of chronic inflammation, the leading cause of over 70% of the mortality diseases plaguing mankind today. Diseases like Arthritis, Cancer, Hypertension, Stroke, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Fibromyalgia and a host of neurological, cardiovascular and autoimmune disorders have a common root cause of oxidative stress.
Reduction of oxidative stress throughout the entire body supports the idea posed above; that by reducing the root cause of illness and disease, our quality of life is improved and less punctuated with painful or degenerative diseases.
Long term testing could show that we both live healthier, and longer.
Increased Circulation
LED Light therapy seems to improve both the quality and quantity of blood flow in the body. Research suggests it builds new arteries (angiogenesis), relaxes existing arterial walls (nitric oxide) and green light has been shown to positively affect the hemoglobin.
Illuminated blood cells seem to ionize which causes them to declump (a common sign of disease). Low oxygen hemoglobin and inflammation (Sickle cell anemia, Leukemia, Lymphoma and Hodgkins) are associated with blood that clumps. This creates an inability for neurotransmitters to communicate messages in the cells.
This improved circulation of high quality ‘ionized’ blood feeds the cells, feeds the tissues, organs and systems, helping to keep them healthy over the long term. Healthier tissues, organs and systems should mean we become less susceptible to debilitating diseases over time.
Adding abundant nutrient transfer to the detoxified cells further supports the cascade of benefits into the tissues organs and systems.
